Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence is Hexagon’s division specialising in production preparation, machining, metrology and quality data management. Its portfolio includes CAD/CAM, G-code verification software, CMMs, portable measuring systems, laser trackers and PC-DMIS. The main objective is to link the digital model of the product with manufacturing and inspection, so that actual measurements can be used to evaluate and adjust the production process.
Smart manufacturing is a production process where machine tools, measuring equipment, software and data operate as an integrated system. This reduces the need for manual data transfer and helps to provide a quicker overview of the process status. The Hexagon ecosystem utilises digital twins, Nexus, Digital Factory and asset monitoring. For example, an NC programme can be tested on a digital twin before actual machining takes place, whilst measurement data can be used for quality analysis.
PC-DMIS is Hexagon’s metrology software for programming and performing dimensional inspection. It works with CMMs, portable systems and laser trackers, utilises CAD models and supports offline programme preparation. According to Hexagon, over 70,000 PC-DMIS workstations have been installed for CMMs. The system helps to standardise measurements, compare actual geometry with nominal values and generate inspection reports.
The main difference lies in their respective roles within the digital workflow. Dassault Systèmes covers design, simulation and PLM through CATIA, 3DEXPERIENCE, DELMIA and other solutions. Hexagon is particularly strong in CAM, CNC programme verification, industrial metrology, sensor technology and production data. These ecosystems can be integrated: one forms the digital definition of the product, whilst the other helps link it to the machining and inspection of the finished part.
Through GEO-MENTOR, you can select Hexagon licences, software products and metrology equipment tailored to a specific process. To configure a solution, you’ll need to specify the type of parts, your machine tool fleet, the CAD/PLM systems in use and your inspection requirements. A solution package, implementation plan and team training programme are then drawn up. GEO-MENTOR supports the project after launch, so Hexagon solutions can be implemented as standalone systems or integrated into a broader CAD/PLM and cloud environment.
Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence is a division specialising in CAD/CAM, industrial metrology, quality control and smart manufacturing. Hexagon AB is a Swedish company headquartered in Stockholm, operating in over 50 countries and employing more than 24,000 people. Unlike Dassault Systèmes and Siemens, Hexagon focuses primarily on the ‘manufacturing → measurement → quality control’ workflow, encompassing metrology, sensor technology and manufacturing data.
| Field | Objectives | Examples of solutions |
| CAD/CAM | Machining preparation and CNC programmes | VISI, WORKNC, EDGECAM |
| Metrology | Part geometry inspection | CMM, 3D scanners, laser trackers |
| Quality control | Comparison of a part with a CAD model | PC-DMIS |
| Smart manufacturing | Integration of equipment and production data | Digital twins, IoT, sensors |
Hexagon brings together four key areas: CAD/CAM, industrial metrology, smart manufacturing and IoT/sensing. Together, they form a closed-loop production cycle: from model preparation and part machining to measurement, quality control and data feedback to production. This approach helps to link engineering, manufacturing and quality control processes within a single digital workflow.
To prepare for production, Hexagon offers several CAD/CAM tools, each of which addresses a specific task. Key solutions:
These products are used in toolmaking and metalworking, where precise toolpath preparation and programme verification prior to machine operation are essential. For example, WORKNC is used for machining complex-shaped components, including turbine blades in the aerospace industry.
The metrology division comprises equipment and software for the precise measurement of parts, assemblies and large structures. It includes:
These solutions are used for incoming inspection, geometric verification and reverse engineering. They are in high demand in the automotive, aerospace and energy sectors, where it is crucial to quickly compare the actual geometry of a product with specified parameters.
Hexagon’s smart manufacturing concept integrates CAD/CAM, CNC machines, measurement equipment and IoT sensors into a single ecosystem. The SFx platform helps to monitor, optimise and predict the condition of measurement assets and their utilisation. This architecture supports the Industry 4.0 approach: data flows from the drawing to the measurements with minimal manual data entry, which helps to identify defects more quickly and improve production efficiency.
Hexagon’s solutions are used wherever precision machining, geometric control and the handling of complex parts are essential. The product range depends on the industry and the specific stage of production – from tooling preparation to the measurement of the finished product.
| Industry | Hexagon products | Key tasks |
| Automotive | CIM + PC-DMIS | Inspection of bodywork geometry, stamped and mass-produced parts |
| Aerospace | Laser trackers | Inspection of large components and fuselage assembly |
| Toolmaking | VISI + WORKNC | Mould and die design, preparation for multi-axis machining |
| Energy | Metrology systems | Measurement of turbine geometries and other critical components |
For example, laser trackers enable the inspection of large aerospace structures directly during assembly, whilst VISI and WORKNC assist in preparing the manufacture of complex tooling.
