However, technical feasibility does not override the manufacturer’s licensing rules and supported configuration requirements. Yes, provided the architecture and access are configured correctly. S3 supports encryption, versioning, event logs, IAM and the ability to block public access. The service is designed for 99.999999999% durability, but this does not protect against accidental deletion by an authorised user. Therefore, backups, Object Lock and recovery testing are required. AWS protects the cloud infrastructure, whilst the customer is responsible for data, accounts and configurations.

On-Demand is suitable for unpredictable tasks with no commitment. Savings Plans are used for stable workloads with a one- or three-year commitment. Spot reduces the price by up to 90 per cent, but allows for instance termination. For CAE and CFD calculations, models are combined: the control node runs on On-Demand, the base load is covered by Savings Plans, and independent tasks are run on Spot. The choice is validated through a pilot.

Amazon Web Services is Amazon’s cloud platform, which provides over 200 services for managing IT infrastructure. AWS began developing public cloud services in 2006. AWS’s key capabilities are divided into five categories:

Computing services – EC2, Lambda, ECS and EKS

Amazon EC2 provides virtual servers for rendering, engineering simulations and CFD calculations. G5 GPU instances are suitable for 3D visualisation, whilst P4d instances are suitable for resource-intensive parallel computing.

AWS Lambda automates file processing and notification delivery without the need for a persistent server. ECS and EKS help deploy containers and set up DevOps processes. For example, running 100 parallel simulations on EC2 Spot instances can reduce computing costs by up to 70 per cent.

Data storage – Amazon S3, EBS and S3 Glacier

Amazon S3 is used for backups, CAD files and data lakes. The Standard, Standard-IA and Glacier classes allow data to be categorised according to access frequency. The indicative price for S3 Standard starts at $0.023 per GB per month.

Amazon EBS provides block storage for virtual servers and workloads. S3 Glacier is suitable for the long-term archiving of project documentation. S3 has a reliability of 99.999999999 per cent – a durability rating of 11 nines.

Databases and analytics – RDS, DynamoDB and Redshift

Amazon RDS is suitable for relational data and supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and IBM DB2. It can be used to store PLM metadata, product cards and change history.

DynamoDB is used for NoSQL data with a flexible structure, such as equipment telemetry. Amazon Redshift helps analyse production metrics and operational data, and generate reports for business analytics.
