BIOVIA™ solutions, based on the 3D EXPERIENCE® platform, enable researchers and developers to collaborate throughout the product lifecycle, bringing science to life.
BIOVIA is a family of scientific software from Dassault Systèmes that brings together scientific data management, molecular modelling, laboratory informatics and quality control on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The solutions cover the entire cycle – from molecular design and laboratory experiments to manufacturing control – and form part of the Dassault Systèmes ecosystem alongside CATIA, SIMULIA and ENOVIA. The platform is designed for regulated GxP processes, while specific laboratory solutions support FDA 21 CFR Part 11. When working to ISO/IEC 17025, compliance also depends on the laboratory’s configuration and quality system. Unlike standalone LIMS or ELN systems, BIOVIA links laboratory results, formulations and manufacturing data in a single traceable environment.
| Capability | What BIOVIA does |
| Scientific data | Centralises research results, structures, formulations and related data |
| LIMS and ELN | Manages samples, experiments, laboratory processes and records |
| Modelling | Supports virtual investigation of molecules, biological systems and materials |
| Quality and compliance | Supports audit trails, electronic signatures and work in a GxP environment |
| Manufacturing | Links R&D and laboratory data with the control and analysis of manufacturing processes |
Laboratory informatics helps manage samples, tasks, results, instruments and experimental data in a shared digital environment. ONE Lab LIMS is used for LIMS tasks, while Workbook provides electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) functionality. Learn more – BIOVIA: Laboratory Informatics.
Discovery Studio is used to model proteins, drug molecules and their interactions at atomic level. For this class of tasks, the solution competes with platforms such as Schrödinger and OpenEye and helps researchers test hypotheses before carrying out physical experiments. Learn more – BIOVIA: Molecular Modelling.
Scientific informatics brings together the storage, search and processing of molecular structures, reactions, biological data and screening results. Pipeline Pilot automates repeatable scientific processes, so scientific data management software can be used not only for storage but also for consistent data processing. Learn more – BIOVIA: Scientific Informatics.
This area helps researchers analyse large experimental datasets, apply statistical methods and visualise results without constant support from an IT team. Automating data access, integration and processing reduces the amount of manual work in routine studies. Learn more – BIOVIA: Data Science.
Formulation development tools link recipes, ingredients, specifications, historical data and regulatory constraints. This approach is relevant to pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, chemicals and CPG, where a formulation must be controlled throughout its journey from idea to release. Learn more – BIOVIA: Formulation Development.
These solutions help manage documentation, audits, CAPA, electronic signatures and other processes in regulated environments. They are designed to work with GMP, GLP, GCP and FDA 21 CFR Part 11 requirements. Learn more – BIOVIA: Quality and Compliance.
Manufacturing analytics brings together process and quality data from different sources to monitor critical parameters in real time and identify the causes of deviations more quickly. Analysis uses statistical methods, data contextualisation and process control tools, including SPC. Learn more – BIOVIA: Manufacturing Analytics.
The platform is suitable for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, medical device manufacturers, chemical and petrochemical businesses, as well as R&D teams in agriculture, cosmetics and household chemicals. This scientific data management software links laboratory results, formulations and manufacturing data in a single environment. For example, when a company runs clinical trials while managing the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients, data can be traced from the sample to the production batch. For modelling physical, chemical and biological processes, the ecosystem is complemented by solutions in the natural sciences, including SIMULIA.
BIOVIA operates as the scientific layer of 3DEXPERIENCE rather than as a separate collection of applications. The common architecture links research, product data, roles, documents and lifecycle processes. The focus is not on an individual file, but on its context, version and subsequent use. Other solutions are presented in the Dassault Systèmes section.
BIOVIA LIMS is a system for managing samples, tasks, instruments, results and laboratory workflows. Within BIOVIA, ONE Lab LIMS performs this role. An ELN, such as Workbook or Scientific Notebook, is used to record experiments, observations, calculations and scientific context. The systems complement each other: LIMS controls the flow of laboratory work, while ELN preserves the content of the research. In ONE Lab, these functions can operate on a shared data model.
Yes. Dassault Systèmes provides GxP-ready capabilities in 3DEXPERIENCE BIOVIA, while ONE Lab supports FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and EU Annex 11. The solutions include audit trails, electronic signatures and controlled access. However, a regulated environment does not become compliant simply through software installation. The company must validate the system and configure its own SOPs. ISO/IEC 17025 compliance should be confirmed separately for the specific laboratory.
Pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemicals, materials and consumer goods are the main areas of BIOVIA application. The platform is suitable for companies that conduct experiments, work with formulations, model molecules or control manufacturing. In pharmaceuticals, LIMS, ELN, GxP and quality are important. In chemicals and CPG, the focus is on formulations and modelling. Discoverant analytics is used at manufacturing sites.
Through APIs, integration layers and the capabilities of individual products. BIOVIA ONE Lab uses open APIs and can be embedded in an existing IT landscape. Workbook supports integration with LIMS, SDMS, CDS and laboratory instruments. The specific architecture depends on the ERP, data sources, security and validation requirements. Integrations are therefore best designed before data migration.
BIOVIA Pipeline Pilot is a platform for building repeatable scientific data workflows. It helps load, clean, combine and analyse data, run ML models and generate reports. Collections are available for chemistry, biology, images, documents and laboratory analytics. For a company, it is a way to standardise data processing and preserve expert logic in reusable protocols.
